What we can't do is turn a blind eye — an undeclared mattress found at collection means an extra charge and a slower job for everyone.

The route that makes sense when the mattress is one item among a house or garage clear-out. Declare it when you book, we add the charge to your quote, and it leaves with everything else in one lift — delivery, collection and seven days' hire are already in the skip price.
Council bulky-waste collection
Leeds, Wakefield and Kirklees councils all collect mattresses from outside your home. Book through your council's website; there's usually a modest per-item fee and a lead time of a week or two, so it suits clear-outs with no deadline attached.
Household waste recycling centre
The HWRCs serving Leeds and Wakefield take mattresses from residents, normally free of charge. You will need a vehicle big enough to swallow a mattress — roof bars and optimism rarely end well — and some sites now ask you to book a slot before you arrive.
Retailer take-back or charity
Buying new? Most mattress retailers will collect the old one on delivery for little or nothing — ask before you order. And if the mattress is clean, undamaged and still has its fire-safety label, furniture reuse charities will often collect it free and put it back to work.

Two genuinely free routes: take it to your local household waste recycling centre, which accepts mattresses from residents at no charge, or hand it to the retailer delivering your new mattress — many collect the old one free or for a token fee if you ask when ordering. A clean mattress with its fire-safety label intact can also go to a furniture reuse charity, which will usually collect.
They are set aside at our Leeds transfer station and sent for compliant POPs processing, where the steel springs are recovered for recycling and the foam and fibres are destroyed as the regulations require. What doesn't happen is landfill — mattresses can no longer legally be buried with general waste, which is the whole reason the separate charge exists.
