Terms & conditions.

The agreement between you and Onyx Recycling Ltd. Please read it before hiring a skip.

Last updated August 2026

Skips supplied by Onyx Recycling Ltd are hired under the terms set out below. These terms are subject to change at any time. Signatures are not required on any documentation as proof of delivery or collection; these terms still apply.

Text messages are sent automatically to all customers, urging them to read these terms. If you disagree with any of them, please request a refund or cancel the skip by calling 0113 539 9836.

01Hire duration

The duration of skip hire, regardless of size, is 7 calendar days. The duration may be extended at a nominal cost. This duration restriction does not apply to trade customers.

02Collection & extensions

Collection of skips can be booked online or by ringing us. If you require the skip for a longer duration, contact us immediately so we can make the necessary adjustments. Additional hire time is granted at our discretion and additional hire charges will apply. Skips are collected at the earliest opportunity. We reserve the right to collect a fully loaded skip before the hire period has elapsed.

03The hirer

“The hirer” means the person or company requesting the provision of a skip-hire service. We will only deal with the hirer as per our records.

04Combustion & fires

Combustion and fires near or in the skip are strictly prohibited. The hirer will be liable for any losses or damages to the skip container, excluding fair wear and tear. The cost of repairing a skip can be between £800 – £1,000.

05Lost, stolen or damaged skips

Lost, stolen or damaged skips are the responsibility of the hirer, and the hirer will be liable for the purchase price of the skip. Customers must notify us immediately of any such incidents or accidents involving, or damage to, the skip.

06Risk of damage to property or persons

Where the driver is requested or directed to deposit or pick up a skip on or from a site which is off the highway, or where delivery otherwise involves the passage of the vehicle over gratings, drains, roads, pavements, forecourts, yards, asphalt areas or any like areas, we shall be under no liability whatsoever to the hirer for any damage howsoever caused whilst the vehicle is off the highway, other than as shall be caused by negligent driving on the part of the driver.

We are indemnified against any claim or demand which could not have occurred had the driver not been so requested or directed. Additionally, the hirer will compensate us for any damage to the vehicle or the skip which would not have occurred had the driver not been requested or directed, and is not due to any negligence on the part of the driver. If skips are requested to be placed over garden walls or fences, any damage to the structure on delivery or collection is the responsibility of the hirer.

07Consequential losses

Consequential losses shall not be our liability, including loss of profits, damage to goodwill, economic and other similar losses, special damages, other direct and indirect losses, business interruption, loss of business or loss of opportunity. We shall use our reasonable commercial endeavours to ensure the equipment arrives when the customer requires delivery. Any approximate times given by us are estimates. We shall not be liable for any delay in delivery of the equipment howsoever caused, and in any event are not liable to the customer, or deemed to be in breach of contract, because of any delays in delivery or collection of skips.

08Cancellation

Cancellation of your skip hire can be done by giving us notice at any time before we start incurring any costs — please give us at least 24 hours’ notice. If you cancel an order and have made any payments in advance, we shall refund the amount less any permit charges (see section 18). We may charge the customer for all costs incurred due to a late cancellation resulting in a wasted journey. The wasted journey charge depends on the distance from the skip location to our transfer station in Leeds.

09Content of returning skips

Content of the returning skips is the responsibility of the hirer. The content of these skips becomes our property on collection.

10Food waste

We are not licensed to handle food waste — do not dispose of this type of waste in our skips, bagged or loose. If we receive any skips containing food waste we have no option but to return the full skip to the hirer immediately, and no refund is applied.

11Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste, as defined by the European Waste Catalogue (Article 114) of the hazardous waste directive (91/689/EC), must not be placed in the skip. Hazardous waste is strictly prohibited.

We are not licensed to handle hazardous products. If any such products are found in a skip, we will return the skip to the sending customer. Please do nottry to hide these products in the skip — the contents of all our skips are segregated at our processing centre, so hiding them puts our workers at grave risk.

We deem the following products to be hazardous waste:

  • Asbestos
  • Cement boards
  • Fuels
  • Large batteries
  • Paints
  • Gas cylinders
  • Powdered substances
  • Sludge or liquids
  • Upholstered domestic seating containing POPs (persistent organic pollutants) — sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, kitchen chairs, dining room chairs, stools, foot stools, home office chairs, futons, bean bags, floor and sofa cushions

The following are deemed not to contain POPs: items that are not upholstered (for example a wooden chair without a cushioned or textile back, seat or arms), deckchairs, and waste from manufacturing new domestic seating where the manufacturer can demonstrate it does not contain POPs.

We can accept upholstered seating as separately declared controlled-waste items at an additional charge — see section 12 — provided you tell us in advance so it can be segregated. Never place it in a skip undeclared.

12Controlled waste

Controlled waste is accepted. The following items are accepted at an additional charge — please tell us about these at your earliest convenience and make payment before collection. This is our current price list:

  • Single Mattress£15 per item
  • Double Mattress£20 per tonne
  • King / Super King Mattress£40 per item

  • Office Chairs (with Foam Padding)£8 per item
  • Small Gas Canister (Must Be Empty)£15 per tonne
  • Fire Extinguisher£10 per tonne

Plasterboard disposal is also subject to the rules in section 13.

13Plasterboard

The Environment Agency has updated its guidelines for disposing of plasterboard (gypsum). Plasterboard can be disposed of in the same skip as mixed waste provided it is double bagged or placed in a refuse bag. The disposal cost depends on the skip size and the amount of plasterboard — current charges are in the price list in section 12 — and is in addition to the skip hire price.

Customers must inform us if they are disposing of plasterboard. If not disposing of a full skip, please give a rough percentage of the skip’s content that is plasterboard so we can charge appropriately. Failure to inform us, or improperly placing plasterboard, will incur additional charges based on the amount of plasterboard, or the costs of decontamination.

14Overloading of skips

Overloading compromises the safety of our drivers and of the public who use the roads. The hirer should ensure the skip is filled no higher than the top of its sides. The hirer is responsible for ensuring the skip is loaded safely and that the area around it is kept safe and tidy. If the skip is overloaded, it is the hirer’s responsibility to correct the situation.

Our drivers reserve the right to remove any objects they feel may jeopardise safe transportation. Any extra costs incurred in removing, transporting or disposing of the contents of the skip will be charged to the hirer. We reserve the right to decline collection of overloaded skips, and excess charges are levied in the event of overloading.

15Extra-large skips (14 & 16 yard)

Extra-large skips are for light materials such as household clear-outs or green waste. Do not fill them with soil, rubble, bricks, large tree stumps or other heavy materials. Heavy materials make the skip too heavy for the equipment to load safely back onto the lorry.

16Garden waste

Garden waste typically includes leaves, flowers, grass, weeds, tree bark and branches, but excludes treated wood and tree stumps more than 50cm in diameter.

17Payment terms

Payment terms for non-account holders are always pre-payment before delivery, or cash on delivery. Account holders pay according to agreed terms, subject to written agreement.

Card payments are processed by Stripe. Because EFR Skips is a trading name of Onyx Recycling Ltd, your card statement, invoice and waste transfer note may show either name — both refer to the same company, and your booking is unaffected.

18Permits

A permit issued by the relevant local authority is required to place skips on the public highway, footpaths and verges. Permits are arranged on your behalf. Charges vary between local authorities but are usually £40 for an initial two-week period. Skip hire permits are non-refundable.

19Public safety

It is the joint responsibility of the customer and ourselves to ensure the skip is lit at all times at night, as per traffic regulations. We provide light beacons and traffic cones to assist with this.

20Documentation

Email copies of waste transfer notes, proof of delivery and invoices can be requested by ringing us or emailing the office at info@onyxrecycling.co.uk.
