Through the nineteenth century the town's mills ground worn-out woollen rags into shoddy and mungo and spun them back into new cloth — respectable fortunes built on other people's cast-offs, and the great spire of Holy Trinity, visible from half the district, raised on the proceeds. For our lorries Ossett is an easy town: down the M1 to junction 40 and along the A638, or picked up on the Wakefield–Dewsbury corridor we drive daily. The stone terraces around the Market Place and Station Road often need an on-road skip under a Wakefield Council permit, which we handle; South Ossett and the streets towards Horbury run to semis and villas with drives, where the skip goes straight onto private ground and no paperwork is needed.

Gawthorpe deserves its own sentence — the village keeps a permanent maypole and hosts the World Coal Carrying Championship every Easter Monday, and its terraces send us a steady line of clearouts and refits the rest of the year. Add the trade units off Healey Road, the newer closes at Flushdyke, and the general churn of kitchen refits and loft conversions, and there's usually an Onyx skip somewhere in WF5. Whatever goes into it comes back to Garnet Road to be sorted properly.
