Castleford sits where the Aire meets the Calder — the Romans forded the river here and called the place Lagentium, and it has been a crossing point ever since. Our crossing is simpler: M621 out of the yard, M62 east, off at junction 31 or 32 and into WF10 inside half an hour. The pits at Wheldale and Fryston are long gone, but the work hasn't stopped: house clearances in Townville and Cutsyke, kitchen refits across the estates, trade skips to the units off Lock Lane and around Whitwood, and garden jobs out in Allerton Bywater and Ledston across the water. Everything we lift in WF10 comes back to our own transfer station on Garnet Road to be sorted, and over 90% of it is diverted from landfill — which is rather the point of the exercise.
