Normanton grew up on coal and railways. A century and a half ago its station was one of the busiest junctions in the north — Anglo-Scottish expresses paused here long enough for passengers to sit down to dinner — and the pits kept the terraces filled for generations. Both are gone, but the location that made the town still counts: Normanton sits a couple of minutes off junction 31 of the M62, which makes WF6 one of the simplest runs we do from the Leeds yard. Book before 3pm and the skip lands next day; ring early and same-day is a genuine possibility.
The centre keeps its Victorian terraces off High Street and around the station, where an on-road skip usually means a Wakefield Council permit — £40, arranged by us, lights and cones supplied. Around Haw Hill park and Normanton Common the streets widen into semis with drives, and the newer estates filling in the town's edges were built with an 8-yarder's turning circle in mind, even if the developers never thought of it that way. Altofts, down towards the Calder, mixes old village streets with newer closes — and claims the Elizabethan explorer Martin Frobisher as its own, which is not bad going for a village most maps squeeze into the margin.
There's a working side to the town too. Normanton's industrial estate is one of the biggest employment sites in the district, and its units take regular builders' skips, exchanges and the occasional RoRo container from us. Domestic or trade, everything collected in WF6 comes back to our own transfer station on Garnet Road, where it's separated into wood, metal, hardcore, soil and residual — over 90% diverted from landfill.
