Rothwell sits a short hop south-east of our Leeds yard, down the A61 and off the A639 — call it fifteen minutes on a clear morning. The spire of Holy Trinity marks the old town centre, Commercial Street still does the shopping, and Springhead Park and Rothwell Country Park bracket the town on either side. The country park is reclaimed colliery land, which says a lot about the area: this was mining country, and the streets of solid red-brick terraces around the centre were built for it.
Those terraces off Commercial Street and Marsh Street are classic 4-yard territory — narrow frontages, some needing an on-road placement with a Leeds City Council permit we arrange. The John O'Gaunts estate and the streets off Wood Lane bring post-war semis with drives, where skips drop without paperwork. And then there's Woodlesford, where the new waterside developments along the Aire & Calder Navigation have kept a steady line of kitchen refits, snagging strip-outs and landscaping jobs coming our way since the cranes left.
Push east and the villages take over: Oulton around its park, Carlton and Robin Hood along Leeds Road, Methley and Mickletown out towards the river crossings, Swillington across the water.
