Where your skip actually goes.
“Where does it all end up?” is the question our drivers get asked most, usually while the skip is still swinging on the chains. The honest answer is more interesting than people expect — so here it is, from your driveway to the last bale.

There’s a lingering suspicion — fair enough, given the industry’s history — that every skip in the country gets quietly tipped into a hole regardless of what the website says. So rather than ask you to take “over 90% diverted from landfill” on trust, we’d rather walk you through the machinery that makes the number true. The name over the gate is Onyx Recycling — recycling isn’t the marketing angle, it’s the actual business. Skip hire is how the raw material arrives.
What follows is the journey of one ordinary 8-yard skip — call it a house renovation in LS27: broken kitchen units, offcuts, a dead radiator, half a wall of brick, and the layer of mystery bags every skip develops overnight.
Collection, the weighbridge and the tipping floor.
Nothing goes anywhere until it's been weighed and looked at — in that order.
The lorry collects your skip and brings it back to our transfer station on Garnet Road in Leeds — the same yard the office sits in, which keeps everybody honest. First stop is the weighbridge: the load is weighed in, logged against the job, and recorded. As a licensed waste carrier we can produce a waste transfer note for any job, and that paper trail starts here, at the gate. Then the skip is tipped onto the floor of the sorting shed, and someone with years of practice has a proper look before any machine touches it. This first inspection does two jobs: obvious bulky wins — that dead radiator, a length of copper pipe — are pulled straight away, and anything that shouldn’t have been in the skip at all is caught before it can cause trouble further down the line. A gas canister in a shredder is a genuinely bad afternoon, which is why the banned items list exists and why we’re boring about it.
The picking line.
Machine and hand, in that order — the machines do the brute force, people do the judgement.
From the floor, the mixed load is fed onto the line. The mechanical stages come first: screens shake out the fines — soil, dust, plaster crumbs — while an overband magnet lifts ferrous metal off the belt before anyone has to think about it. What’s left rides the conveyor past the picking stations, where the sorting happens the way it still happens at every serious facility in the country: by hand, at speed, with a bay for each material.
Watching the line run is oddly hypnotic. A picker sees a belt of chaos and reads it like text — wood there, rigid plastic there, that’s cable, that’s card gone soggy, leave the fragment that’s glued to the brick. Machines are catching up, but a good picker still beats an optical sorter on a mixed skip load, because no two skips are remotely alike. By the end of the belt, your renovation has stopped being “waste” and become six separate commodities.
Six streams, six destinations.
Everything that comes off the line leaves the yard as a material with a market, not as rubbish with a fee.
Wood
Timber, chipboard, old furniture carcasses and fence panels come off the line into their own bay, get de-nailed by magnet and are shredded. Clean grades go off to become panel board; rougher material goes for biomass fuel. Either way, the wardrobe you broke up gets a second career.
Metal
The easiest win in the building. Steel and iron leap out to the overband magnet without being asked; aluminium, copper and brass are pulled by hand. All of it goes to metal merchants for remelt — scrap metal has held its value for centuries for a reason, and it's the one stream that actively pays its way.
Hardcore & rubble
Brick, block, concrete and tile are crushed and screened into recycled aggregate — the stuff that goes back under new driveways, paths and foundations across West Yorkshire. There's a decent chance a previous customer's extension is currently holding up someone else's shed base.
Soil
Soil is screened to take out stones, roots and the inevitable surprises, then graded. Clean screened soil is reused as fill and landscaping material rather than buried as waste — which is the whole point of separating it in the first place.
Plastics & card
Rigid plastics, film and cardboard are picked, sorted by grade and baled. Card and the better plastic grades go straight to reprocessors. It's the fiddliest stream on the line — fifteen kinds of plastic look identical at conveyor speed — and the pickers are better at it than any machine we've seen priced.
Residual → RDF
What's left after everything recoverable has been pulled — the true odds and ends — is shredded into refuse-derived fuel and sent for energy recovery. It isn't recycling in the strict sense, but it keeps the material working: powering energy plants instead of sitting in the ground for three hundred years.
Why over 90% stays out of the ground.
The comfortable myth is that recycling happens because everyone's principled. The durable truth is that it happens because the incentives finally line up.
Landfill is taxed, heavily and deliberately — every tonne buried costs serious money in landfill tax before the gate fee is even counted. Sorted materials, on the other hand, have buyers: metal pays, clean wood and card offset their handling, and crushed aggregate sells to the same building trade that filled the skip. For a firm with its own transfer station, sorting isn’t a cost of doing business; burying is. That’s the engine under the 90% figure, and it’s why the figure survives busy weeks and slow ones alike.
It’s also why we say “diverted from landfill” rather than “recycled”. Recyclate, aggregate and refuse-derived fuel are three different fates, and only the first two are recycling in the strict sense. The phrase is chosen to be accurate, not to gleam. We’re a family firm that’s been at this since 2017; the fastest way to lose nine years of reputation would be a green claim that doesn’t survive a site visit.
What still can't be saved.
If a waste firm tells you it recycles absolutely everything, ask to see the shed. Here's what defeats ours.
Some material resists every stage. Composites are the main offender — items engineered from several materials fused together, like foam-backed carpet or laminated boards, which can’t be economically split into anything a reprocessor wants. Contaminated fines are the other: the gritty sweepings at the bottom of every load, too mixed and too dirty to grade. Heavily soiled fragments, odd rubbers and a rogue’s gallery of unidentifiable bits round out the list.
Much of that still avoids the ground by going into the RDF stream — but not all of it, and pretending otherwise would be the “100% recycled” claim you see elsewhere and should squint at. The single-digit remainder that genuinely has no recovery route is what goes to landfill, properly documented. That’s the whole story: no hole in the ground behind the shed, just a sorting operation working through whatever Leeds and Wakefield throw at it, six days a week.
